Making a Harley Truly  Nasty Fast!

Procharger introduces Supercharging a Harley - Courtesy of Crossroads Cycles in Rio Rancho.

by Tim Cordova

Yea I'd like to think I know what the hell I'm doing on occasion messing with compressors on internal combustion engines.  Yet low and behold a long time desire of mine becomes a reality via Procharger.  Obviously if you know Superchargers you'll know of Procharger's long time standing in the circles of centrifugal compressors.

Nothing was more fun than watching one of their B-1 Superchargers on Dean Garcia's 2005 Screaming Eagle 103 Fat Boy, Intercooled and everything.  I watched and lent a finger or two to Rich's installation of the Chrome power adder.  Since Crossroads has a dyno and ProCharger likes their work, Crossroads is an exclusive dealer of Procharger Superchargers designed for the Haley V Twin.  Yes she was a tight squeeze, but I was most impressed with accurate tolerance for the belt application, intercooler location and how easily bolts went in without a fuss.  That in itself is cool.  This was an injected model and yes they make one for the Carbureted Harley.  These systems are designed for stock and modified V-Twins.

So what kind of numbers are we talking here?  Stock rating for these American V Twins is 90hp.  After installing the ProCharger B-1 the bike pulled 149.30 hp.  To say it's a hoot to drive would just be down right dorky.  When in fact it's such a gain, you feel the horse power to weight ratio effectively and immediately!  In fact this Harley will propel Dean into the next generation of speed and fun factor.  A surprise for crotch rockets indeed yet the sleeper factor is lost to the aesthetics of ProCharger's chrome compressor and accessories!

The installation was in fact painless to a trained mechanic.  Crossroads Owner Rich Weinbrecht, with the help of shop manager Ken Keeney, found it to be quite simple.  Ken is currently waiting patiently for the carbureted version of the B-1 for his cycle.  In 06 the V-Twin went to the closed loop system on their injection, which can cause a little more work.  Also on the 06 and later you have to change the pressure valve in the tank.  So that can also be a little more involved.  The most important thing in any supercharging aspect is getting air/fuel ratios on key, particularly under boost.  The company gives you a base line CD to start.  Having the dyno allows you to really dial in the performance factor as well as keep the motor in the all important safety range.  With detonation comes bad feeling and heavy repair costs.  Again the dyno proves it's worth when raising the total volumetric efficiency of these American V Twins.
